The world’s longest coastal touring route, the Wild Atlantic Way, has just been launched in Ireland and showcases the little country’s stunning west coast. The 1,500-mile driving route stretches from Donegal in the north to Cork in the south, taking in dramatic sea cliffs, rugged coastlines, breathtaking views, deserted beaches, stunning peninsulas, cozy pubs, quaint Irish villages and charming seaside towns. There are 500 visitor attractions, 53 Blue Flag beaches, 120 golf courses and 50 loop walks along the way.

Explore Ireland’s untamed beauty

There is nowhere on the Emerald Isle quite as ruggedly beautiful as the wild west coast, which is often considered to be the ‘real’ Ireland. From the untamed coastline and towering mountains to the golden sand beaches and magical native forests, there is no shortage of spectacular scenery, and you will find plenty of ways to enjoy it. Go kayaking in sea caves and snorkeling in coves or try surfing on the thrilling waves in Donegal. There are fishing trips, world-class golf courses, hiking trails, heritage sites, horseback riding, dolphin watching and ancient bog tours on offer as you travel along Ireland’s rugged western extremities.

‘Ceade Míle Fáilte’

Ireland’s unofficial motto ‘Ceade Míle Fáilte’ literally translates to ‘a hundred thousand welcomes’ and you will find plenty of friendly locals along the west coast. You might even hear some Gaelic being spoken in the ‘Gaeltacht’ areas, which are Irish speaking regions that are dotted along the route. The west is the home of traditional Irish music and you will come across hundreds of opportunities to listen to it – in country bars in the little village, lively pubs in bigger towns and on the vibrant streets of Galway City.

The Wild Atlantic Way caters for all kinds of travelers, from people looking to discover their roots to adventure seekers and Irish music lovers. There are a number of four and five-star hotels, stately homes, spas and resorts along the way where you can unwind and pamper yourself as you take in the scenery on your journey.
