Itinerary
Day 1 – Arrive at Edinburgh Airport and transfer to your hotel. Discover wonderful Edinburgh at your pace on a hop-on hop-off bus tour. Stroll the Royal Mile, ancient streets linking Holyrood Palace with Edinburgh Castle. Shake off the jet-lag with a leisurely walk through this amazing city. Overnight: Apex Waterloo Place, Edinburgh
Day 2 – Explore life below the Old Town. Until the 18th century most residents of Edinburgh lived along and beneath the Royal Mile. Mary King’s Cross, under the City Chambers is one of the most famous of these areas. Take in some shopping along the unique and picturesque Princes Street. Overnight: Apex Waterloo Place, Edinburgh (B)
Day 3 – Meet your driver/guide in the lobby and depart for the rugged west coast. First stop is Stirling Castle, where William Wallace defeated the army of Edward I. Continue around the south of Loch Lomond and up the bonnie banks. Take in the fabulous scenery of the head of Loch Long and over “Rest and Be Thankful” towards Loch Fyne. Here you can visit Inveraray Castle or ‘Duneagle Castle’, home to the Duke of Argyll and the recent Downton Abbey, with beautifully preserved interiors spanning many generations of Campbells. Day 4 – Head north to Glencoe a stunning area steeped in history. Travel over the Ballachulish Bridge passing Ben Nevis, the UK’s highest mountain to the Glenfinnan Monument, where Bonnie Prince Charlie landed in 1845. View the Glenfinnan viaduct featured in the Harry Potter films. Catch the ferry to Skye
and visit the Clan Donald Centre which incorporates Armadale Castle Gardens and the Museum of the Isles. Overnight: Cuillin Hills Hotel, Skye (B)
Day 5 – Take a scenic drive past Mealt Waterfall and Kilt Rock, the waterfall drops 300 feet into the sea. Nearby visit the Skye Museum of Island Life where a township of thatched cottages has been preserved, depicting the conditions on the island at the close of the 19th century. Visit Dunvegan Castle, the oldest continuously inhabited castle in Scotland. See the famous Fairie Flag of Dunvegan. Return to Portree. Overnight: Cuillin Hills Hotel, Skye (B)
Day 6 – Marvel over the magnificent scenery en-route to the Skye Bridge and back to the mainland and Eilean Donan Castle. Travel through mountain vistas towards Invergarry and stop at Fort Augustus on the tip of Loch Ness. Enjoy the Caledonian Canal Visitor Centre then travel up the west side of Loch Ness to Urquhart Castle set on a rocky promontory at the north shore of the Loch for a chance to spot the famous Loch Ness Monster. Travel through Inverness to visit Culloden Battlefield where the last hand-to-hand battle was fought on British soil. Finally, see Clava Cairns, one of the best preserved Bronze Age burial sites in Scotland. Overnight: Kingsmills Hotel, Inverness (B)
Day 7 – Start the day with a two-hour Jacobite Freedom Cruise. Enjoy the magnificent views then alight at Urquhart Castle where you will have the chance to explore. Next, travel down the south bank and stop for lunch at Dores Inn. After lunch travel to 14th century Cawdor Castle which was built as a private fortress by the Thanes of Cawdor. Day 8 – Explore Cairngorms National Park stopping first at House of Bruar, Scotland’s most prestigious country store. See Queens View, where Queen Victoria took tea in 1866; the viewpoint commemorates Queen Isabella, wife of Robert the Bruce who ruled Scotland between 1306 and 1329. The stunning view is one of the most famous in Scotland. Sample famous whisky at Edradour Distillery, the smallest and last of the original farm distilleries in Scotland. Next stop is Scone Palace, the coronation place of Scottish Kings. Travel over the Forth Road Bridge and back into the capital. Overnight: Dalhousie Castle, Bonnyrigg (B)
