Standing at 100ft tall and weighing more than 300 tons each, the magical Kelpies are a man-made wonder and a feat of engineering. The works of art, created by artist Andy Scott represent the lineage of the heavy horse of Scottish industry and economy, pulling the wagons, ploughs, barges and coal ships that shaped the geographical layout of Falkirk. In the evening experience the Edinburgh Military Tattoo, a show that brings together the best of British Military with international performances from a global cast. It is one of the earliest examples of Gothic Revival architecture.  Its collection includes more than 1,300 pikes, muskets, swords and other weapons. Before arriving to Oban stop and discover Lochgilphead, an attractive town sitting by the Crinan Canal, which links Loch Fyne and the Clyde to the east with the Minch and Inner Hebrides to the west.

Oban is often referred to as the “Gateway to the Isles” because it serves as a transportation hub for ferries to the Hebridean islands. The town is also famous for its seafood, particularly its fresh seafood restaurants and its annual Oban Seafood Festival.

Overnight: 3*  Royal Hotel in Oban (B)

Day 7 Saturday 23rd August

After breakfast depart Oban for Fort William. Enjoy The Jacobite Train experience. This 84 mile round trip takes you past a list of impressive extremes. Starting near the highest mountain in Britain, Ben Nevis, it visits Britain’s most westerly mainland railway station, Arisaig; passes close by the deepest freshwater loch in Britain, Loch Morar and the shortest river in Britain, River Morar, finally arriving next to the deepest seawater loch in Europe, Loch Nevis! The end of the line, Mallaig was founded during the 1840s as a fishing village. From here take the Ferry to Armadale and continue to Portree, the capital of the Isle of Skye. Portree is only about 200 years old and was created as a fishing village at the beginning of the 19th century by the then Lord MacDonald. The name Portree or Port Righ, King’s Port in Gaelic, (as on the road signs) is popularly thought to derive from a visit by King James V (of Scotland) in 1540 but the area around the harbour was called Portree or Portray long before the arrival of the king. Its name really comes from the Gaelic for Port on the Slope.  Dinner tonight at your hotel.

Overnight: 4 * Skeabost House Hotel in Isle of Skye (B, D)

Day 8 Sunday 24th August

After breakfast explore the beautiful Isle of Skye, a great destination for wildlife lovers, walkers and climbers.  Stop to visit Dunvegan Castle, the oldest continuously inhabited castle in Scotland. It has been the ancestral home of the Chiefs of clan MacLeod for 800 years. Originally designed as a fortress to keep people out, today you can tour an award-winning castle and Highland estate steeped in history and clan legend. This afternoon there will be opportunities to walk on the Trotternish Peninsula.

The Old Man Of Storr is a 55 meter high pinnacle of basalt rock which is all that remains of a 2,800 million year old volcanic plug. The rock face known as the Old Man of Storr gained its name because of the outline the rocks display. When viewing the sight, you may be able to see a resemblance of a man’s profile.

Dinner tonight at your hotel. Overnight: 4 * Skeabost House Hotel in Isle of Skye (B, D)

Day 9 Monday 25th August

After breakfast depart Skye via Eilean Donan Castle. Our first stop is this Scottish icon and certainly one of the most popular visitor attractions in the Highlands. Strategically located on its own little island, overlooking the Isle of Skye, at the point where three great sea-lochs meet, and surrounded by the majestic splendor of the forested mountains of Kintail, Eilean Donan Castle is truly breath-taking. Inside the castle you can wander round most of the fabulous internal rooms of the castle viewing period furniture, Jacobean artefacts, displays of weapons and fine art.  Continue to Glencoe and explore the Lochaber area; prepare to be amazed by its wild beauty. Glencoe Valley a place of breathtaking natural beauty but also the site of the infamous massacre which took place in the early hours of 13th February 1692, when government troops, led by the Campbells, slaughtered the MacDonalds. Stop at the informative visitor center to learn more about this stunningly beautiful region.  Continue to Loch Tay a magnificent dark stretch of water, 15 miles (24 km) long and around 508 ft deep.
